QUEUE HABIT, WHO CARES?

Fidel Hardjo

Oueue habit is still not giving a strict concerned in our country. Wherever we’ll go queue jumpers are easily seen. We hate to see this ill habit but we can do nothing to change it. Who cares to educate queue habit for our young generation?

This is the most problem in our public place. No exception. It happened in the government office, mall, school, hospital, public transportation. The most embarassing thing is easily find it at the airport as “the main gate” of the nation.

What still we must be proud of in this great country (Indonesia Raya) if once guest step in our beloved country facing this unpleasent view? This will create a bad impression for the guest to picture the whole country for what we are and will be.

This is just the view at the gate. What most probably happened inside, maybe more barbaric? Of course, our concern sticking out this issue, is not to show good periphery image. The most important is to cultivate the queue habit like the other country does. Why we cannot?

Although queue habit didn’t originate in our own culture still, we have to learn good things from our neighbouring countries to develop a better nation. Let us flash back. How many young people have died in crowd whether in football or concert stadium? How many innocent people have been a victim of this political stampage? How much our time and energy have been lost for this ill habit?

I might not have a valid data for this. But this is a real happening here and now. All we have to do is how to prevent more and more innocent victims. We are ignorant that the queue habit is so helpful in our daily activities. So what are the advantages of having queue habit?

First, getting use to fall in queue helps us a lot to save energy and time. The wise people said time is money. Once time passed by and never comes back then we also lost time to produce something (money). But if we are well-disciplined falling in queue, we can save our energy to do the other great things.

Secondly, queue habit motivates us to respect the rights. No matter what the person’s status is, children or adults, and educated or uneducated person must fall in queue. We have to accept: first come first serve. That is the philosophy of queue habit.

Regardless of who is influencial or have a thick wallet is given the first service. If so, the weak and the poor people are always the loser. And, the civilized person can be measured on how much they are respected by others.

Thirdly, queue habit is not only to create a safety environment but also to make our society more beautiful. Of course, when we are discipline to fall in queue, we probably minimize the zone of the thieft to grab your wallet or bag. Not only that. The police also can easily detect the irresponsible person who cause chaos.

We simply thought that making a beautiful city does not only depend on how well the buildings were built but also how well the citizens are ruled inside which affect a lot in our city.

Fourth, queue habit is the simple way to eliminate zero corruption in our country. The queue jumpers actually are the real corrupt. They corrupted our time, energy and rights. Moreover they are brave to corrupt the country’s fund, project and budget with a thick face. That’s why they disregard the moral-ethic value and religion teaching.

But if we, altogether have a firm commitment to cultivate queue habit at least starting in the family then pass to formal schools, corruption might never widespread in this rich country with very poor people.

Because queue habit taught us a high moral value. That is how to reach our goal with fair, respect, patience and self disciplined. The art of having queue habit is no law enforcement at all but it really comes from the heart of each person to do it so.

Why we cannot try? We had known the risk of not having queue habit as we mentioned above. But the problem is from where we have to start and who will make the first step to crack down this crucial issue?

Government has to do something to tackle this issue as the most urgent program for educating our people. Other countries such China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Hongkong have done so far. In the beginning there was a trial and error in implementing it even so tough but finally they are successful. Why we cannot? Not because we cannot but we are too slow in everything. Other countries have developed ahead in many aspects but we are so stagnant.

We have to start implementing queue habit in the school. School is the best place to train well our young generation for learning queue habit from kindergarten until at the university level.

I had experienced in the school where I am teaching right now. In the beginning It was very hard for me to instruct the kids to fall in queue. I teach them repeatedly day by day. Now even if I am not there they can manage. I think this is a simple lesson to show that we can change. Only those who never tries, everything is impossible!

Finally, as we prepare forthcoming election, we fervently pray that everyone must preserve queue habit in every aspect of political movement.
